Bill splitting

Have you ever thought about the way you split the bills when living together with someone? Have you gone the 50/50 route, or are you splitting according to one another's pay? If you took the time to pick a method, rather than winging it, are you sure it's a really fair one? Below are average remuneration for men and women in France, along with average spending in housing, transportation and groceries. You can replace the values with your own to try it out.

Equal contribution

The equal contribution repartition is quite easy: Simply split the bills by the number of household members, each paying for an equal portion of the spendings.

Though it might seem fair, notice that the one earning less ends up with Infinity less than the highest earner.

Ratioed contribution

The ratioed contribution is adjusted to every one's income: Everyone pays according to their earning, thus leveling the amount given.

Even if at first thought it might sounds fair, the lowest earner still has Infinity less than the highest earner after paying the bills.

Equal remaining

The equal remaining calculation however does not try to balance contributions: It effectively make sure everyone ends up with the same amount to spend after the bills are paid

Here the lowest earner has Infinity less than the highest earner after the bills are paid.
